Nature Nuts Afterschool
Enrolling Now for the May 16 – June 14 Session
With record breaking temperatures and unexpected maintenance needed for the van, last week was full of surprises. Everyone was very accommodating and flexible, so hats off to all of our wonderful families.
I would like to give a special thanks to the folks at Blue Canary for fixing the van at top speed. We had transmission trouble on Monday as we reached Pritchard Park, and I received the van back on Thursday with a newly built transmission, a clean interior and exterior, and the green light for safely driving children again.
Another special thanks to Ordway Elementary School for allowing us to use their property on Tuesday as we were not able to explore very far without transportation. We played games on the playground, pretended to be squirrels caching nuts, and painted with watercolors in the shade of the small “forest” near the ball fields.
Last week’s Earth Day reminds us to take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty we are surrounded with on this island. We are very lucky to have exceptional programs to get children outside connecting with nature. When people, especially in childhood, develop a deep bond with nature, they are more likely to care about the planet and its lifeforms.
Nature Nuts might look like simple play-time, but it is really about creating memories, building a foundation for stewardship, and developing a love of the natural work. As Baba Dioum famously stated: “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.”
Register for our fourth session of Nature Nuts by May 11th. Call or visit biparks.org to sign up!
