Our Philosophy of Care

Responsive caregiving, support for self-directed discovery and flexibility are the foundations of Peacock Family Center Child Care. PFC’s caregivers learn to read an individual child’s cues and respond in nurturing and supportive ways. Access to a consistent caregiver who is sensitive and responsive promotes secure attachment. Secure attachment in childhood provides a critical foundation for learning and creativity and enables a child to develop meaningful interpersonal relationships in adulthood.

Children explore, construct and deepen understandings of their world as they engage in the arts–visual, language, musical, dramatic–math and science. Caregivers support children’s self-directed discovery and competence by providing individually appropriate experiences and uninterrupted time for exploring and interacting with others, materials and nature.
PFC childcare programs are consistent with the current policy recommendations of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) based on current scientific knowledge of child development from birth to age five.

PFC supports each family’s unique child care needs by providing flexible scheduling options.  PFC offers part- and full-day care, school age before and after school care, drop in care and respite care.

Infant and Toddler Care

At Peacock Family Center, infants and toddlers age 6 weeks to 2.5 years are assigned a consistent caregiver who follows the child through the classrooms providing a secure attachment figure for optimal development.  Links with family and home culture are valued, and are integrated into our child care program for each child.

Three areas of intentional “educaring”--care designed for a child's optimal development--occur with infants and toddlers:

  • In daily care giving tasks, such as meals and diapering, the caregiver is specifically trained to interact in an attuned way that is respectful and encouraging of a child’s participation and development of skills and autonomy.
  • The child care rooms are designed so that each child can explore, experiment, and develop gross and fine motor skill safely, developing his or her own self-direction and motivation.
  • Caregivers practice daily dedicated observation time — the caregiver observes each child and records activities and development, laying the basis for objective, supportive and responsive caregiving.

Preschool-Age Child Care

At Peacock Family Center, children ages 2.5 through 5 years have days that are rich with cognitive, social, and physical experiences; full of the comforts of good friends, loving caregivers, and familiar routines; and busy with child-centered, developmentally appropriate activities. By providing a balanced program honoring multiple intelligences and varied learning styles, we support the growth of the listener, speaker, reader, writer, mathematician, scientist, artist, musician, dancer, and friend within each child.

Four areas of intentional “educaring”--care designed for a child's optimal development--occur with preschoolers:

  • Caregivers facilitate children’s exploration of ideas, guide children’s work on projects, lead children in skill-building activities and provide occasions for discovery and joint problem solving.
  • The design and use of the preschool space encourage exploration, communication and relationship.
  • Caregivers practice consistent and deliberate daily observation of the emotional, social, physical and cognitive development of each child, documenting the development in words and photographs.
  • Caregivers and parents regularly share their observations to further their understanding of the child and his/her world.
