“We feel so lucky that our children get to get dirty, be outdoors, and just experience the world every day after school. ” – Nature Nuts Parent
Nature Nuts is a unique outdoor and environmental education program for children K-2 on Bainbridge Island in partnership with the Bainbridge Island Metro Parks & Recreation District (BI Parks). Participants are encouraged to experience adventurous play, free exploration, and guided field investigations that engage youth in meaningful interactions with nature, support whole child development, and foster a connection to our community.
In order to meet the diverse needs of our community, Nature Nuts offers a variety of programming that runs seasonally throughout the year. This page focuses on our after school program, and you can click to learn more about our camps and our workshops!
After School: Grades K-2. Focusing on communication, team building, and the Next Generation Science Standards, our after school program offers fun, hands-on outdoor programming on and near Bainbridge Island, facilitated by experienced instructors from Peacock Family Services. Offered on Mondays from 12:50-5:30pm, Tuesdays through Fridays from 2:20-5:30pm. Transportation from the local schools is provided as we discover all that our local ecosystems have to offer.
Outdoor Living Skills (May 15 – June 15)
Can you safely build a fire when all of your materials are wet? Can you thoughtfully build a shelter that will survive a cold, stormy day? Can you carefully tread through the forest to track a small critter? After this session, we’ll be able to do that – and more!
We are excited to share our plans for the 2017-2018 school year! Participants should bring clothing appropriate for present weather conditions and a water bottle. Nutritious snacks provided. Meet at the Ordway Bus Hub, but pick up at Pru’s House in the Grand Forest Hilltop Park. *No programs on 11/10, 11/23, 11/24.
Let’s Lead (September 11 – October 13)
Orcas and wolves live as a pack to survive, and in this session, we’ll have the opportunity to learn from their examples! Taking inspiration from different leadership styles in nature – predators and prey and beyond – we’ll work together to become the best leaders we can be!
Searching for Seasons (October 16 – November 17*)
How do animals prepare themselves for the changing seasons? What happens when plants become dormant in the colder months? These are some of the questions we will explore as we find the fun in the weather, discovering the natural cycles present in the changing of seasons!
Musical Mysteries (November 20 – December 15*)
Music’s presence in nature is subtle, and stunning! Join us as we uncover the fun in music present in creatures and habitats, while experiencing creative ways to add our own symphonies to the sounds we discover. Local musicians will also help inspire us find our own rhythms.
Nature Nuts’ after school program is based out of Pru’s House in the Grand Forest Hilltop Park. We spend most of our time exploring the outdoors at various locations on and near Bainbridge Island, but step inside this wonderful facility to warm up by the fire, dry off, and have a snack during the pick-up time of 5pm-5:45pm.
Registration and billing for our Nature Nuts after school program takes place through our partner, BI Parks. We accept youth K-2 from public, private, and home-schooled families on Bainbridge Island. “I love when [my daughter] comes home and shares about things you encountered on the trails, edible plants, and things she’s learned about wildlife… I feel so lucky that we stumbled into this program this year. Thank you!” – Nature Nuts Parent
